Ascent is a piece that features the traditional masquerade of the Efik people of southern Nigeria
called the ‘Ekpe”. A Efik is core to the Efik tradition and has a binding history with the overall
culture and tradition of the people. The picture represents all the influences tied to the historical
development of the Ekpe and the importance or sacredness of the Ekpe in the lives of the Efik
people. It signifies the ascendence of African culture and traditions finally with more people
open to understanding the things that drive our social and cultural attitudes.
